Let me start by saying “The Back In The Day Bakery Cookbook” is beautiful, well photographed with a pleasing layout and great color choices. It’s a cookbook that will make your mouth water just looking at the pictures of the recipes. With fun recipes like Peach Cobbler Muffins and Salted Caramel Apple Pie you will want to immediately head to your kitchen and begin the journey back to a time when life was simpler and dessert was a daily occurrence . I was able to try out a number of the recipes and have found a few new favorites.
With a well written help section, it is an easily accessible cookbook even for the beginning baker. There are a wide variety of recipes including baked custards, cakes, cookies, pies, candies and savory main dishes to keep you opening the cover to try something new.
However, I do have a few criticisms. First, I’m not a big fan of giving well established foods cutesy names. I am also disappointed they claim to be old fashioned scratch bakers, but use purchased puff pastry. Personally, I think including a recipe for puff pastry and also having the recipe work with purchased dough would have been a better choice. I have never been to their bakery, but I would be disappointed if they were using purchased puff pastry. There are also a number of small mistakes in the editing that make me concerned about the accuracy of all the recipes. When the description of a recipe mentions the nutty flavor of walnuts, but the recipe has pecans in it I question how well it was checked for errors. That said, I didn't have any trouble with the recipes I tried.
